when we bought this house and left NYC we had intended to have a garden right away. four years later we are finally getting around to it!
michael built the garden beds last Saturday. it rained all day long. POURED, i tell you! i felt so bad for him and expected him to be in a bad mood when he came in. happily, he was in a great mood! when Michael was in high school he had many different jobs one of which was working at a nursery. working with the compost and the peat moss brought back happy memories, he said.
liam is so excited about the garden. we have been planting each day after school. last night he said the dinner prayer and he said "please bless our garden that it can be blessed to grow us healthy food."
i too am hoping and praying that our garden will be successful! i have never had a garden before. i have grown herbs and tomatoes. but nothing this elaborate. i still have a lot more to plant. so far i have planted cilantro, scallions, rosemary, dill, oregano, red lettuce, romaine lettuce, spinach, roma tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. i love working in the dirt and planting with my kids has made it even more fun. even Ez hung out with us this afternoon.
we also made a vermicompost bin. what's vermicompost? watch this educational and highly entertaining video (these guys crack me up!)
sutton loves the worms! she wants to hold them. i will be honest, i did a little dry heaving when i transferred the worms to the bin. ugh, they seriously gross me out BUT they make the best compost!

Wow, you guys did a ton of work over the weekend. Friday night there was nothing there! Great job.
Great job on your square foot garden! You are going to have a major haul this summer! :) Sutton needs to come over to our house if she's into worms right now.. we have at least three containers of dirt and worms outside and Jack finds more every day. (I myself don't like to hold them either.. Roly Poly bugs I can handle, but nothing that's going to leave a slimy mess on my hands.) I hope you update pics of your garden when everything is blooming! It's going to be beautiful!

Truly inspirational! We've had the tiller at our house for a month, and we still haven't tilled the garden. We are partly busy and partly lazy. Plus it has been raining every other day for the last 2 weeks! I love the rain! I wonder if I could convince Paul to go the square foot garden route?
